In 2009, at 29, I embarked on what would become a memorable journey. Flying into JFK airport, I rented a car with plans that extended beyond New York City itself. My ultimate destination was Waldorf, Maryland, where a friend awaited my arrival, but I craved a bit of adventure along the way.
Driving through NYC was an experience in itself, even though I couldn't stop to explore. The city seemed to stretch endlessly as I navigated my way out—towering skyscrapers, bustling streets, and a palpable energy that's uniquely New York. Even from behind the wheel, the magnitude of the city was overwhelming.
Though my time in New York was brief, merely passing through created a lasting impression. The city called to me even as I continued south toward Maryland. Sometimes the glimpses we get of places leave us wanting more, and NYC certainly left its mark on me.
I've promised myself to return someday—to walk those streets properly, to experience the city beyond the confines of a rental car. But until then, I'll cherish that fleeting drive through America's most iconic city, a small but significant detour in my journey to visit a friend.
